What is Open Access?

Open Access sessions at Hot Pink Press allow you to use our Risograph & finishing equipment to print your own projects independently. To use the studio you must first complete a workshop, induction or 1-1 printing session depending on your experience.

Open Access sessions can be booked by the hour and are partially supported, rather than taught sessions, as we expect you to use the equipment yourself. However, we are on hand to help with troubleshooting and questions when they arise.

The studio is usually open between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, but we are happy to accommodate sessions outside of these hours where possible.

How do I start printing at Hot Pink Press?

The type of induction you need depends on your existing Risograph printing experience. Read our guide below to see what route suits your experience most. 

  • The best way to start learning about Risograph printing is to book onto one of our Risograph workshops. These are designed for complete beginners and give you a great knowledge base in Risograph printing. Once completed, you will then be required to attend a group induction (£15) and a 1-1 printing session for your first hour* of open access printing (£30 plus cost of materials used).

  • First book onto one of our group inductions (£15) and then book a 1-1 printing session for your first hour* of open access printing (£30 plus cost of materials used). Once completed, you are free to book in regular Open Access sessions.

  • Book onto one of our group inductions which are held regularly. We still ask you to book a 1-1 session for your first hour* of printing, as each studio & machine is different. Once completed, you are free to book in regular Open Access sessions.

Our studio is equipped for printing, trimming and binding your Risograph projects. We are happy to store any ongoing work in our studio between sessions.

  • Red, yellow, blue, black, teal, purple, green, brown, orange, fluro pink, aqua.

  • Studio paper stock ranging from 80gsm – 300gsm

  • Electric Guillotine – Ideal 4850-95 EP

  • A3 Lightbox

  • Binding Machine – Rayson TD-1500B34R

  • Electric Stapler – Rapid 106

  • Presco Corner Cutter

  • A4 Inkjet Printer & Scanner – Epson ET2820

  • Desk space 

To ensure sufficient drying time, any single print which is double sided or has more than 2 layers, must be carried out over multiple sessions.

Studio Facilities

Open Access sessions are £10 per hour, plus the cost of any consumables used during the session. During your session you will be able to access all our studio and printing facilities listed. You must book a minimum of 1 hour in the studio.

What is a 1-1 session?

These sessions are held with an experienced Risograph technician who will guide you through your printing project and can help with file set up. You must book in a 1-1 session for your first hour* of Open Access printing as learning how to operate a Risograph machine independently takes time and experience.

Every printing project is different, so your 1-1 will be tailored to your project. 

*For projects that require more file set up support or are more complex we will advise you to book in more 1-1 time in your first session. This will be covered in your induction.

How do I book in a printing session Hot Pink Press?

To book in a 1-1 printing session or regular Open Access session you can book in with us via email. Let us know when you’d like to come in, what you’re printing and roughly how long you think you’ll need.

The studio can be booked hourly, between 1-8 hours per day. You will have access to all the facilities in the studio during your session. You will also be asked to keep track of your printing, as consumables for the Risograph printer are charged individually. If your project is ongoing, we are happy to store your work until your next session.

FAQs

  • After completing your induction, you must book a printing session within one year. If you have not attended a session within this timeframe, you will be required to complete another induction before using the equipment. This ensures that all information covered in the induction remains fresh and that you can operate the equipment safely and effectively.

  • Our studio itself is a fully accessible space, with an accessible bathroom. Using the equipment unsupported requires standing, lifting heavy drums and hand dexterity.

    We are happy to accommodate accessibility needs where possible and welcome bringing an extra person for support. Please get in touch with us to discuss.

  • If you have completed a workshop with us in the past and would like to start open access printing, you will need to complete an induction & 1-1 session with us before printing.

    If you completed an induction before 1-1 sessions were introduced and have not used the studio to print yet, you will now need to book a 1-1 session for your first hour.

    If you have used the studio before, there is no need to book a 1-1 session.

  • Our Open Access Sessions allow you to use the Risograph printer yourself. With our Print Service, we do the printing for you.

  • Yes, individual inductions are £45 and private group inductions can be quoted for depending on the size of the group. Drop us an email if you’d like to book in.

  • Yes. We offer private printing lessons and a file set up service for £30p/h. Our file set up service can prepare the files for you or walk you through in person how to prepare your artwork for printing.

    Our printing lessons are 1-1 taught printing sessions, where we will print your project with you. These sessions are £30p/h plus cost of materials used. If you would then like to book in an Open Access session, you need to complete an induction first.

  • Yes. Every studio and machine is different and our inductions ensure you understand our machine and are able to operate it safely.
